Blog Post - I Almost Skipped Portugal

Have you ever had this happen before?

You plan an amazing trip somewhere and are so excited to go you start counting down the days. All you can think about is relaxing on the beach reading your new novel or exploring the streets of a new city and tasting the local cuisine. You are so ready to get away and reset!

Yet as it gets closer and closer to the trip, something kind of weird starts happening. You start doubting if you should go given all the things happening at home or with work. You question if you even deserve a vacation right now. You create all these mental movies of things you’ll fall behind in while away.

And before you know it, the trip is tomorrow and you’ve been so busy creating stories of why you shouldn’t go that you haven’t even packed…

Or am I the only one?

This exact thing happened to me a few days prior to leaving for my Portugal trip in November. A trip I’d been planning with my family for months. A trip I could hardly wait to be on!

My subconscious started rearing its head prior to my trip, bringing up all of my limiting beliefs. It was almost wild to watch as I knew exactly what was happening. My subconscious was trying to hold me back and keep me safe. This trip was not just a family trip. It was also an opportunity for me to do some work on some upcoming projects. Projects that will create expansion for my business and myself.

So I was hearing things in my mind like “Who are you to have a tv show and host a high end  retreat? Who’s going to watch the show? Who’s going to pay to travel with you?”

There was so much noise and negativity in my mind it was making me want to move back to LA where I was comfortable. Where I know all the restaurants and stores and have way more friends and acquaintances.

In fact, I didn’t even want to go on the trip to Portugal! I wanted to stay in my bubble of comfort. My subconscious was feeling scared to expand into the unknown and was basically throwing a hissy fit:)

Yet I moved to Orange County last year for a change and expansion.  I travel internationally for change and expansion. I take action towards new goals like hosting a VIP shopping retreat in Paris for change and expansion. These are actually things I want in my life, yet that darn subconscious just wants us to stay the same! The same is comfortable.

So if you've ever experienced something similar prior to a trip, you can now thank your subconscious for trying to keep you safe. And instead of going down the rabbit hole of all the reasons you shouldn’t go (like I started doing), stop and ask yourself if your subconscious is trying to take over.

Literally stop and have the conversation! You’ll have your answer really fast and can let your subconscious know that you’re not doing that today:)

Then get to packing! Once you start laying out the fun outfits you’re going to wear you’ll start to feel excited and remember why you’re going on the trip. And if you’re anything like me, once you get on the plane all of the excitement for the trip comes rushing back.

I’m sharing all of this to let you know you’re not alone if you’ve ever felt this way. And having the awareness of why is step one in continuing to allow yourself to expand.

Oh and if you’re curious, the trip to Portugal ended up being absolutely amazing on all levels… high quality family time and great movement on my business projects.
